Meet Joanne Chen

Dr. Joanne Chen received her doctorate degree in clinical psychology (Psy.D.) from Azusa Pacific University and her bachelor’s degree in psychology from University of Southern California. She completed her internship with Specialized Foster Care with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health where Dr. Chen worked with children and young adults under the custody of Department of Child and Family Services. During her time there, she received specialized training to work with children from 0 to 3 years of age.

Dr. Chen has extensive experience working with children and their families and has a passion for seeing people becoming the best versions of themselves. Her doctoral research reviewed the risk and resiliency factors of humanitarian workers in overseas context. Her interest in Global Psychology led her to partake in a work-study program where she travelled to Nairobi, Kenya to work alongside local mental health workers and teachers in Kawangware, one of Nairobi’s urban slums.

Areas of clinical interest are individual therapy, play therapy, trauma, identity development, and wellness. She works from a systems perspective and utilizes a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) approach to treatment. In her downtime, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, traveling, being outdoors and watching movies and nature or home renovation shows.
